The Carteret County Public School System ranks among the top systems in the state on academic achievement. Of the 117 public school systems in the state, Carteret County ranks 3rd in the state on the 9-subject End-of-Course scores, which are administered to students in high school and those taking Algebra I in grade 8. Carteret County ranks 10th in the state on grades 3-8 reading scores and 22nd in the state on grades 3-8 math scores. The county ranks 12th in the state on grades 3-8 reading and math scores combined. These scores indicate the continued academic growth of our students and the outstanding dedication of the school system's employees.

The Carteret County Public School System serves the students of Carteret County, a county located on the beautiful Crystal Coast of eastern North Carolina. From Cedar Point to Cedar Island there are 85 miles of beautiful coastal scenery, friendly towns, and 16 public schools that are committed to creating opportunities for all students to do their best and to succeed.

The school system employees approximately 1,180 individuals and is the largest employer in the county. The system's student enrollment for the 2004-2005 school year is about 8,250.

Test results for the 2003-2004 school year indicate that eight of our 16 schools were designated "Honor Schools of Excellence" by the state, meaning the school met expected academic growth, had 90 to 100 percent proficient of the students proficient, and made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). One school was designated a "School of Excellence", meaning the school met expected growth and had 90 to 100 percent proficient of the students proficient. Five schools were named "Schools of Distinction", meaning the school met expected growth and had at least 80 percent of the students proficient.

For the fifth consecutive year, the combined Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) scores of Carteret County students both increased and remained above the North Carolina state average. As a group, the county's graduating Class of 2004 recorded a verbal score of 508 and a math score of 516, for a combined SAT score average of 1024. This combined score was only 2 points below the national average. The county's SAT verbal score of 508 matched the national average and was 9 points above the state average. The county's SAT match score was 2 points below the national average and 9 points above the state average Carteret County Public Schools' SAT score ranked 2nd among the 19 school districts in the Southeastern district of North Carolina, and 23rd among the 117 public school systems in the state.
